Character Name: Eclipsa
Age: Around 375 to 400 (or 25 to 50 depending on how much you count frozen time)
Canon: Star Vs. the Forces of Evil
Canon Point: Late Season 3, after Butterfly Trap
History: History
Personality: Eclipsa Butterfly is a complicated person and it requires a bit more serious examination of her character. She's treated as a horrific villain who committed various atrocities against the people of Mewni. Her reign of terror is marked with fear and terror by everyone who discusses her. Her return from her permanently frozen state results in her immediate imprisonment, to avoid her from corrupting anyone with her evil magics.
The problem is she hasn't apparently done anything. She frequently calls her magic "dark" and openly admits to be very selfish. But otherwise, the disgust and anger she's treated with by the people around her in no way match her actual actions. When she's put on trial, Queen Moon is aggravated and confused to discover that they don't actually have any evidence she was planning to do anything nefarious other than hearsay. Eclipsa wanted to leave her husband, get down and dirty with a monster, she got down and dirty with a monster, and had a wonderful marriage and child with a monster. This, of course, led to a reputation of being a horrific creature of doom because of Fantasy Racism. Even noting that Eclipsa might not be evil is treated as a sign they've been hypnotized by her evil powers.
Eclipsa's entire personality can be defined by this decision and the subsequent reputation. Despite such a stink following her around everywhere, she doesn't particularly care what people think of her. When people call her "villainness," her response is to shrug and say "sure, if that's what you want." She'll even lean into it, spooking random people with jokes and teasing them about messing with their mind. If she ever resisted her reputation, she's long since given up trying to explain that her valid points aren't just hypnotic tricks. Eclipsa's general demeanor is chill, relaxed, and absurdly playful for someone in such a strange position.
With the world so heavily skewed against her, Eclipsa has a tendency to act selfishly and encourage selfish behavior. When asked if she's evil, she simply notes that "I did what was best for me." The greatest crime leveled against her is how she abandoned the role of Mewni's queen, which she admits and accepts. She eggs Queen Moon on to mind wipe a guard when he becomes inconvenient. When confronted about the "Evil Chapter" she created in the spellbook, Eclipsa's explanation involves claiming that "I wrote much eviler spells that didn't make it into the final draft." When asked if she ate babies, she answers no but adds on that she has indulged in psychologically torturing teenagers. She's got major self-control issues, her most frequent temptation being her habit eating candy left and right on a whim. In the end, if you're in the way of what she wants, Eclipsa has very little trouble doing what needs to be done for herself.
And yet, for all her faults, Eclipsa is capable of some incredible empathy and understanding. She comforts a young Queen Moon over the death of her mother. She frequently offers (perhaps bad) advice to Star for solving her numerous troubles and comes off as genuinely fond of her alleged descendant. These are the same people from the same family that has trapped her within the ice for three hundred years. More than anything, she deeply loves her husband and daughter and part of her selfishness stems from her desire to be with them. She comes off as a quirky, friendly grandmother who offers sage advice in the same breath as suggesting an evil spell or two.
Eclipsa is eccentric, vaguely sinister, selfish, and its entirely possible she has long-term evil plans under her sleeve that hasn't been revealed at the time of this writing. But she's also sweet, pleasant, friendly, and generally non-judgmental.
Powers/Abilities: She has immense magical power and a good portion of it is like, vaguely evil? But she doesn't know how to do it without a wand so like. Psh.
